Mothecombe Garden Open Day

Mothecombe, spring, flowers, trees, country estate, flete estate

Mothecombe Garden recently opened it’s gates to welcome a record number of visitors on it’s first open day. Warm sunshine attracted 411 adults and lots of children, who all enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the garden. A delicious selection of tea and cakes were available to purchase as a welcome refreshment, served in the Victorian kitchen of Mothecombe House. Most importantly, the event successfully raised over £3000 towards the upkeep of All Saints Church, situated locally in the picturesque village of Holbeton.

Guests were treated to the sight of the magnificent magnolias and rhododendrons, in full bloom a month ahead of last year. The banks throughout the garden were also covered with the vibrant hues of primroses, cyclamen, violets, wood anemones and celandines.

Mothecombe Garden recently featured in an edition of  House and Garden Magazine which highlighted the history of the garden since the nineteenth century.  The ongoing conservation work being undertaken by the Mildmay- White family will ensure the gardens become and continue to be, a peaceful sanctuary for Bees, Butterflies and other insects.

Situated next door to Mothecombe House is the very charming Mothecombe Garden Cottage. This 6 bed cottage is set in the heart of the romantic gardens, surrounded by flowering shrubs, trees and bird song. Inside, it is a comfortable family house but also suitable for elderly and less able guests with stair lift access to the first floor. The enclosed garden to the South is positioned to make the most of the sun and guests are welcome to walk through the private garden to Mothecombe beach or through Mothecombe village to the Schoolhouse cafe.
