Bathing Water Quality Survey Bathing Water Status Bathing Water Quality Survey Bathing Water Status at Coastguards Beach I'm sure you'll be aware of the growing concern about the sorry state of nearly all the rivers across the country. Nearly all UK rivers are seriously affected and there are widespread efforts by local communities to halt and reverse the damage. Here on the Erme we too are trying to do our bit. This river passes through five parishes on its way to the sea. All five have now joined together to try and find the main trouble spots. The aim is to try and identify local remedies wherever possible and to collect evidence which can be used to compel South West Water to take positive action. The Coastguards' beach is a key link between the mouth of the Erme and Mothecombe beach. A local group of beach goers is applying to DEFRA for it to be designated as a Bathing Beach. This would mean that the Environment Agency would be legally obliged to monitor the water quality during the bathing season (May to September) and to inform the public of any temporary pollution risks. There is currently no requirement to do this. Gaining this designation would enable us to make sure that our visitors and local people are all kept as safe as possible. Designation would also allow us to obtain objective evidence about the state of the Erme, which hopefully will show long lasting improvements to the quality of the water over time. As part of the application, DEFRA requires us to consult with people who might be affected by any change of designation. So we are circulating a very short questionnaire as widely as possible. We very much hope you will be willing to help us with this, along with any friends and family who may also be visiting the Flete Estate and/or the local area.
