Flete Estate

Introducing Artist in Residence, Shelley Castle

In September I completed an MA in Arts and Ecology and began looking for an area of land which I could return to and work with on a daily basis.  I was fortunate enough to discover the Flete Estate and have spent the last month walking and photographing as a way of getting to know it.  With a site this large, it's difficult not to feel overwhelmed by the variety of light, birds, trees and landscapes.

My first walk as artist-in-residence was on Monday 8th November, a gloriously shiny day that was to mark the end of autumn.  I followed the Western carriage path and was struck by the sheer volume of wildlife - I felt as though I were trepassing in nature's playground.  In somewhere like this there is a sense that we become participants rather than protagonists.  This is, of course, a more sustainable position to be in.

Through winter I will continue using digital media but am also planning to experiment with a variety of  photographic forms including using a pin-hole camera.  I've begun work on a series of pencil drawings and am currently fermenting oak galls to make ink for further sketches.
